A bill is set to be presented in the Lok Sabha, aiming to grant statutory status to Amaravati as the exclusive capital of Andhra Pradesh. The proposed Adhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2026 will amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 to officially designate Amaravati as the state’s capital. The amendment will specify that Amaravati shall be the new capital, replacing the previous provision for a new capital.
The amendment clarifies that ‘Amaravati’ encompasses the capital city areas identified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014. Effective retrospectively from June 2, 2024, the amendment seeks to solidify the status of Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, urging the Government of India to make this change.
The bill’s statement of objects and reasons highlights the resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, emphasizing Amaravati as the new capital. This move, initiated by the TDP-led NDA government, aligns with the resolution passed on March 28, paving the way for the bill. The resolution specifically called for Amaravati to be declared and notified as the sole capital city of the state, with detailed amendments to the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Assembly Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu forwarded the resolution to key authorities, including the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Union Home Minister, the Union Home Ministry Secretary, and the State government’s Chief Secretary.
