The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha has strongly criticized the BJP-led government for the increasing prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, and other essential goods. The BJD highlighted that despite a drop in global crude oil rates, the prices of fuel and essential commodities have surged, burdening the common people. Biju Mahila Janata Dal President Snehangini Chhuria expressed concern over the significant rise in prices, pointing out that a domestic LPG cylinder’s cost has more than doubled in the past decade.
Chhuria condemned the state and union governments, citing examples of the escalating prices. She mentioned that the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder, which was approximately Rs 415 in 2014, has now soared to Rs 968. Additionally, prices of petrol, diesel, and commercial gas cylinders have also surged, impacting the household budgets of ordinary citizens. The BJD leader emphasized that these price hikes have particularly affected lower-income groups, middle-class families, small traders, and individuals in the hospitality sector.
The BJD leader raised questions about the lack of benefits to consumers despite the fall in international crude oil prices. Chhuria urged the government to reduce taxes on petroleum products and advocated for bringing petrol and diesel under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. She believed that such measures could potentially alleviate the financial strain on consumers. Furthermore, Chhuria criticized the government for its alleged insensitivity towards the public’s challenges amid inflation and escalating fuel expenses.
