The Himanshu Singh murder case in Jamshedpur has sparked a political uproar in Jharkhand, leading the BJP to declare a city bandh in Jamshedpur on July 3. The BJP demands murder charges against police personnel allegedly involved in negligence in the case. Additionally, the party plans a torchlight procession on July 2 to protest the perceived breakdown of law and order in the state.
Addressing a press conference, BJP Jharkhand President Aditya Sahu emphasized that the incident signifies not just a murder but a direct attack on the rule of law and public trust in the police system. Sahu urged for murder cases to be filed against the responsible officers and personnel, immediate arrests of all accused, and a swift trial in a fast-track court.
“The morale of criminals has risen to such levels that murders are happening openly in front of the police,” alleged Sahu, highlighting the alarming situation. The incident occurred on June 27 outside a pub in Jamshedpur, where Himanshu Singh was fatally attacked after objecting to the harassment of women by a group of youths.
In a tragic turn of events, Himanshu sought refuge in a police vehicle but was dragged out and brutally assaulted by the attackers in the presence of police personnel. Despite efforts to save him, Himanshu succumbed to his injuries on June 29. Sahu criticized the policing system’s failure, stating that if a citizen seeks refuge in a police vehicle and is still killed while police stand by, it reflects a severe breakdown in law enforcement.
Demanding adequate compensation and government support for the victim’s family, the BJP leader accused the Hemant Soren government of failing to ensure public safety. In response to public pressure, Chief Minister Hemant Soren removed two senior police officers and emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety. Strict actions against criminals and negligent officials were promised by the Chief Minister.
