On the last day of campaigning for the first phase of the Assembly polls, a Bharatiya Janata Party procession faced an attack in Dantan, West Midnapore district. Reports suggest that a BJP candidate was among those targeted, resulting in multiple injuries. One individual with critical injuries has been hospitalized in Balasore, Odisha.
The incident occurred as BJP candidate Ajit Kumar Jana was campaigning in the Dantan Assembly constituency. Miscreants allegedly attacked the rally during its journey from Sabra to Mohanpur. The procession was ambushed in the Antala area, where assailants used sharp weapons and sticks, damaging vehicles and setting several bikes on fire.
Allegedly affiliated with the Trinamool Congress, the attackers not only vandalized the candidate’s car but also targeted the bikes of party workers and supporters. Jana reportedly sustained hand injuries, with other BJP workers also getting hurt. All injured individuals were promptly taken to local hospitals, with one critical case being treated in Balasore.
Following the incident, tension gripped the area, leading to BJP workers and supporters blocking the Egra-Solpatta state highway near Mohanpur police station in protest. They demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits, prompting a significant police presence to manage the situation and initiate an investigation. Despite denials from local Trinamool Congress leadership, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
