A controversy arose when R. Sreelekha, the BJP candidate from Vattiyoorkavu, criticized the Kerala government for its handling of women’s safety issues. At an event in Sasthamangalam, she accused the government of ignoring concerns like “love jihad,” leading to a lack of safety for women in the state.
Sreelekha, a former senior police officer, shared her own troubling experiences and criticized the lack of support she received. She also alleged that even the Kerala Director General of Police did not support her, suggesting that such backing is subject to “political approval.”
Referring to a recent incident involving a Minister’s wife, Sreelekha questioned the government’s response, claiming that despite complaints to the police grievance cell, no effective action was taken. Her remarks have not only stirred political debate but also highlighted her distinguished background as the first woman IPS officer in Kerala to reach the rank of Director General of Police.
Sreelekha’s entry into politics last year, joining the BJP Kerala unit, has been notable. Despite initial success as a Councillor candidate, her aspirations for Mayor were dashed. Now contesting in the Vattiyoorkavu Assembly constituency, she represents a strategic move by the BJP to capitalize on her profile and the party’s growing influence in the region.
