The Karnataka unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the government’s decision to disallow saffron shawls and headgear in schools and colleges. BJP leaders accused Siddaramaiah of showing intolerance towards Hindu beliefs and favoritism towards minority communities. Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka stated that the Chief Minister reacts negatively to Hindu symbols and practices, alleging bias.
Ashoka further criticized Siddaramaiah for actively participating in minority community events while allegedly displaying discomfort with Hindu traditions. He questioned the Chief Minister’s alleged intolerance and animosity towards Hindu customs and religious symbols. Ashoka emphasized that Siddaramaiah should represent the entire state, not just minority communities, urging him to respect all beliefs and traditions equally.
The controversy arose after the Karnataka government permitted the wearing of hijabs and sacred threads in educational institutions, revoking a previous uniform order. This decision sparked strong reactions from Hindu organizations and the BJP, who encouraged students to wear saffron shawls to school. Earlier, Ashoka had condemned the Congress government’s move, linking it to a strategy of appeasement and divisive politics to retain voter support.
