In the Jorhat Assembly constituency, BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami is ahead of Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi after the fifth round of counting. Official figures show BJP with 23,339 votes, while Congress has 15,326 votes, giving Goswami an 8,013-vote lead.
The widening gap is seen as an initial setback for Congress in this crucial constituency, prompting close monitoring for any potential changes in subsequent rounds. Vote counting is ongoing with heightened security measures, and clearer trends are anticipated later in the day.
Across the state, the BJP-led NDA is leading in 98 Assembly seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance is ahead in 25 constituencies during the initial counting stages for the Assembly elections.
Polling for the Assembly elections took place on April 9, witnessing a significant voter turnout of 85.96% from over 2.50 crore eligible voters. A total of 722 candidates, including 59 women, are vying for seats, with Congress fielding the most candidates at 99, followed by BJP with 90.
