BJP Minority Morcha National President Jamal Siddiqui reported receiving death threats and extortion demands through WhatsApp messages. The threats, sent between May 25 and May 27 from mobile number 8899162823, led Siddiqui to file a complaint with the Nagpur Police.
The accused demanded a sum between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore through UPI and bank transfer, threatening harm to Siddiqui and his family if the money was not paid. The messages also mentioned bomb blasts and targeted killings of senior Congress leaders, citing disrespect as the reason for the attacks.
Siddiqui submitted WhatsApp screenshots and chat logs to the police as evidence. A case has been registered against the unidentified accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation and extortion, along with the Information Technology Act.
Police are actively investigating to trace the origin of the mobile number and identify the sender using call record analysis, IP address tracking, and cyber forensic examination. Teams have been assigned to the case on a priority basis, given the seriousness of the threats.
Political circles have shown solidarity with Siddiqui, emphasizing the need for swift action against those responsible. The incident underscores the rising concern of cyber threats and political intimidation through digital means, highlighting the vulnerability of public figures to anonymous online dangers.
Authorities urge citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious messages, with ongoing efforts to track the mobile number 8899162823 as the investigation progresses.
