The BJP has expressed support for the upcoming introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Gujarat Assembly. Party officials highlighted that the UCC has been a longstanding aspect of their agenda, emphasizing its importance in ensuring equality and justice, especially for women. However, Opposition leaders have called for a cautious and consultative approach in implementing the UCC.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi noted that the current circumstances in the country warrant the implementation of the UCC. He stressed the need to consider present conditions and demographic changes while implementing the code. BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo reiterated the party’s commitment to the UCC, citing its successful implementation in Uttarakhand and advocating for its nationwide adoption.
Opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, have emphasized the importance of a sensitive and inclusive approach to implementing the UCC. Chaturvedi highlighted the Supreme Court’s recommendation for multi-stakeholder consultations and the need to build public trust before its implementation. A high-level committee in Gujarat, led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, has submitted a comprehensive report to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, outlining recommendations for a uniform legal framework on personal law matters.
