Harshad Parmar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, emerged victorious in the Umreth Assembly by-election in Gujarat by defeating Congress rival Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan with a margin of 30,743 votes, as per the Election Commission of India. Parmar secured 85,500 votes, surpassing Chauhan’s 54,757 votes after the completion of all 23 rounds of counting. The bypoll was necessitated by the passing of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar in March, who had held the seat in the 2022 Assembly elections.
The counting process, which commenced in the morning, saw Parmar maintaining a consistent lead over Chauhan throughout all rounds. Harshad Parmar, son of the late MLA, contested his first major election after serving in local governance roles. His candidacy received support from senior BJP leaders during the campaign. On the other hand, Chauhan, a prominent Congress figure, has a history of serving in key organizational positions within the party in Gujarat.
The Umreth Assembly constituency, located in Anand district, witnessed a voter turnout of slightly over 59% across more than 300 polling stations, with a total of six candidates in the race. Despite the participation of multiple candidates, the contest primarily revolved around the BJP and Congress, with other parties playing minor roles. The Umreth seat, known for its mix of rural and semi-urban areas, has traditionally been a battleground between the two major parties.
With this victory, the BJP retains its stronghold in the region, securing the Umreth constituency. The by-election coincided with similar polls in various states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tripura, and Nagaland, with the results declared on the same day as Assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. These elections serve as a crucial indicator of the political landscape for national and regional parties striving to maintain their influence.
