Hitendra Nath Goswami from the BJP has emerged victorious in the Jorhat Assembly constituency, defeating Gaurav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress by 23,182 votes, based on official Election Commission of India data. Goswami secured 69,439 votes, surpassing Gogoi’s 46,257 votes, showcasing the BJP’s strong performance in the area amidst a broader pro-BJP trend in the state.
In the electoral race, other candidates lagged significantly behind, with Pranab Priyankush Dutta from the Aam Aadmi Party securing only 701 votes and Hemanta Kumar Pegu from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) receiving 581 votes. Additionally, 1,319 votes were cast for NOTA (None of the Above).
The outcome in Jorhat is part of a larger electoral shift in Assam, where the BJP seems to have garnered considerable backing. Analysts attribute this to development-oriented campaigning and the party’s organizational strength influencing voter choices in the constituency.
Polling for the Assembly elections took place on April 9, witnessing an impressive 85.96% voter turnout from a 2.50 crore-strong electorate. A total of 722 candidates contested, including 59 women candidates, with the Congress fielding the most candidates at 99, closely followed by the BJP at 90.
