Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH) has issued an orange heat warning countrywide as temperatures are set to rise to 40 degrees Celsius in the upcoming days. The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of BiH (FHMZ) has declared the alert effective from June 27 to June 30, highlighting the most critical period between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with temperatures expected to range from 33 to 40 degrees Celsius.
Residents, especially the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic conditions, are advised by the institute to limit outdoor activities, stay well-hydrated, and adhere to guidance from health and emergency services. Firefighters in Mostar are actively working to put out a landfill fire that has been burning for days, with a new fire erupting on Saturday. Simultaneously, in Trebinje, a wildfire near residential areas has reignited, posing a threat as it advances due to changing winds.
Amid a record heatwave in Europe, the World Health Organisation has labeled the situation a “health emergency.” Italy is bracing for heightened red alerts, while France recently experienced its hottest day on record. The national thermal index in France reached 29.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 and during the historic 2003 heatwave. Meteo-France forecasts a further escalation in temperatures in the near future.
