Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the United States, alleging that they used false pretenses to initiate an “unnecessary war” against Iran. Lula stated that the US falsely claimed Iran possessed or was pursuing nuclear weapons, labeling it as a fabrication during an interview in Brazil. He highlighted the history of US military engagements based on deceit, such as the unproven weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, emphasizing that wars do not offer solutions.
Lula urged the UN Security Council to carefully consider the conflict’s repercussions, pointing out its adverse effects on Brazil, including escalating fuel prices and economic strains. Due to the Strait of Hormuz’s closure, Brazil is experiencing a surge in diesel costs, prompting the government to implement tax reductions and enhance market supervision to support low-income individuals.
Following joint US-Israel military actions on Iran in late February, global trade disruptions and heightened oil prices have impacted the world economy. Meanwhile, the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported significant damage to over 115,000 civilian structures, including crucial facilities like healthcare and education centers. Humanitarian efforts are ongoing, with teams addressing the aftermath in more than 1,200 affected regions.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs highlighted the severe repercussions of the airstrikes in Iran, particularly on essential services. Iran’s health sector suffered damage to 309 facilities and 42 ambulances, with seven hospitals evacuated since the attacks commenced.
