British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned, submitting his resignation to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace after a farewell speech at 10 Downing Street. Starmer, who led the Labour Party to victory in the July 2024 general election, officially took office on July 5 that year. He announced his resignation as Labour leader and prime minister on June 22, paving the way for Andy Burnham to take over.

Andy Burnham, the newly elected Labour leader and former Mayor of Greater Manchester, is set to be appointed as the new prime minister. Burnham, who won the Makerfield by-election, received nominations from 379 Labour lawmakers, making him the sole candidate to meet the required threshold. He is expected to form a government after being invited by the king at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking at the Trades Union Congress headquarters in London, British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed Burnham’s leadership, emphasizing his support from Labour lawmakers. Burnham, who collaborated with Starmer on legislation in the past, highlighted the need to address the centralization of political power and privatization of essential services in the country since the 1980s.
