With the upcoming jallikattu season in Tamil Nadu, bull rearers are urging the government to fulfill its promise of providing a monthly incentive of Rs 1,000 to native bull owners. This support is seen as vital for preserving indigenous cattle breeds and easing financial pressures on small-scale rearers.
Ravikumar, the state president of the Social Justice Council, has petitioned the Tiruchy District Collector to honor the government’s 2021 election commitment. He has also raised concerns about the online registration system for jallikattu events, alleging bias against local farmers in favor of larger commercial participants.
The call for government assistance has gained traction in Pudukkottai district, known for hosting the first jallikattu event of the season at Thatchankurichi. Many bull owners in the region, who engage in various competitions statewide, emphasize the importance of the promised incentive for their livelihoods.
Jallikattu, a cultural tradition in Tamil Nadu, places the responsibility of conserving native breeds on farmers. M. Suresh, a bull owner from Mangadevanpatti, highlights the financial challenges, noting that each bull incurs significant daily expenses for care, feeding, and training. The proposed incentive, though modest, is viewed as a lifeline during non-competitive periods.
Expressing similar worries, Ramesh, who owns 28 bulls participating in events across districts, points out that gaps between competitions often lead to financial strain and potential debt for farmers. Younger breeders like Kannan and Murugan stress the importance of government support in recognizing their efforts to safeguard native breeds.
Organizers of jallikattu events also echo the plea for assistance, citing the mounting financial pressures faced by many farmers. They believe that government aid can prevent distress sales and safeguard the indigenous cattle population. As the 2026 Assembly elections draw near and event schedules remain uncertain, bull owners emphasize the immediate need for the long-awaited incentive to uphold Tamil Nadu’s traditional sporting heritage.
