Kolkata, Aug 17 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Monday rejected the plea for an urgent hearing of the case of Trinamool Congress MLA, Dilip Mondal, who had approached the High Court challenging the FIRs filed against him.
The case is still pending and Dilip’s lawyer Kishore Dutta again drew the court’s attention on Monday, seeking an expedited hearing.
Dilip’s lawyer said that more FIRs were being filed against his client. The police are filing one FIR against him almost every day on various charges. So far, the number of FIRs has reached 39. Therefore, an expedited hearing is needed.
A plea for an expedited hearing was filed in the Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya of the Calcutta High Court. However, Justice Bhattacharyya did not accept the plea.
The judge said that a hearing of Dilip’s case may be held next Friday. The hearing is not possible before that and the High Court will hear Dilip’s appeal as per the list.
The police arrested Dilip, an MLA from Bishnupur in South 24 Parganas district, from Odisha’s Puri in May. A case was registered against him under non-bailable sections on multiple charges, including threatening and creating unrest.
Dilip won his constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections despite the Trinamool’s defeat in the entire state. He was missing since the declaration of the results of the election and was not seen in the area.
Multiple complaints were being filed against him and his son was also arrested by the police.
In May, a video of the Bishnupur MLA went viral on social media, the authenticity of which was not verified by IANS. It is alleged that Dilip made threatening comments against the workers and supporters of another party in the video. A complaint was filed against the MLA at the police station over the incident.
Based on the allegation of intimidation, the police registered a case under non-bailable sections and started an investigation.
For the sake of that investigation, a raid was conducted at his palatial house in Pailan of South 24 Parganas district on May 14, but he was not found at home.
According to local sources, he fled the house after getting the news of the police raid and since then, Dilip had been in hiding.
The police started a search operation at various places and later, the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police came to know that Dilip was in a hotel in Puri. Based on that information, the STF and Diamond Harbour Police raided that hotel in Puri and arrested him.
