A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court has issued an interim stay on the FIR lodged against actress-turned-politician Mimi Chakraborty. This action was in response to a complaint filed by event organizer Tanay Shastri, who also initiated a Rs 20 lakh defamation suit against her. Shastri, previously arrested on harassment charges by Chakraborty during the previous Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government, alleged false accusations leading to his imprisonment.
Chakraborty, a former Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member, faced the defamation suit after Shastri’s release on bail. Following her non-appearance in court despite repeated summons, Shastri’s counsel, now a BJP legislator, sought charges against her. In a bid to avoid coercive police action, Chakraborty approached the Calcutta High Court, resulting in the recent interim stay on the FIR.
In January, Chakraborty had performed at an event organized by Shastri in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas district. Disputes arose when Shastri allegedly removed her from the stage prematurely due to time constraints, prompting Chakraborty to file a harassment complaint against him. Subsequently, Shastri filed a counter-complaint, denying the allegations and accusing Chakraborty of tardiness.
