As Canada adjusts its diplomatic focus in Asia, it aims to establish a long-term strategic alliance with India. The emphasis is on creating a “new normal” in the India-Canada relationship, focusing on rebuilding trust and enhancing a more robust strategic partnership. Former Indian diplomat Sanjay Kumar Verma noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to India signifies a fresh start in diplomatic relations rather than just a restoration process.
Verma highlighted the significance of Carney’s visit, emphasizing that it marked a shift towards a more stable and enduring strategic foundation between India and Canada. He pointed out that Canada’s diplomatic strategy in Asia is evolving, with efforts to strengthen ties with India, engage with Pakistan, and maintain a pragmatic relationship with China. The prioritization of India as a key strategic partner in Canada’s Indo-Pacific and global strategy is evident in this recalibration.
According to Verma, Canada views India as a crucial partner in various areas such as trade diversification, clean energy, technology cooperation, and regional stability. However, he noted that a major challenge in deepening the India-Canada relationship is the trust deficit caused by extremist activities on Canadian soil, particularly concerning anti-India Khalistani extremism. Addressing this issue is crucial for building a more stable and meaningful partnership between the two countries.
