Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged citizens to prioritize “buy Canadian” and “build Canadian” in response to a tariff threat from US President Donald Trump. Carney emphasized the importance of focusing on controllable factors amidst economic threats from other nations. While not directly naming the United States, Carney highlighted the significance of supporting domestic products and industries to mitigate external risks.
In a recent development, Trump warned of imposing a 100% tariff on Canadian imports into the US. Expressing concerns on his social media platform, Trump cautioned against Canada becoming a conduit for Chinese goods entering the US market, predicting severe consequences for the Canadian economy. He further threatened Canada with hefty tariffs if it engages in trade agreements with China.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Canada’s trade minister, Dominic LeBlanc, refuted the possibility of pursuing a free trade deal with China. LeBlanc clarified that recent discussions primarily focused on resolving key tariff issues rather than establishing new trade agreements.
