Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that his government is committed to safeguarding national interests in response to recent tariff threats from the US. Carney made these remarks during a meeting with provincial and territorial leaders, emphasizing Canada’s support for its workers, farmers, businesses, and families amidst trade pressures from Washington.

“We are in a stronger position than we were when this trade war started 18 months ago,” Carney affirmed. He attributed this strength to the determination of Canadians and the unity of provincial leaders.

US President Donald Trump recently signed proclamations to impose a 50% tariff on specific Canadian goods, alleging discrimination against US commerce. These tariffs, set to take effect on August 19, target selected Canadian imports such as dairy products, alcoholic beverages, and motor vehicles.

In response to the US tariffs, Carney criticized them as a violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. He disclosed that discussions with Trump have been initiated to escalate trade negotiations and address the escalating tensions.

The White House defended its actions, citing efforts to counter perceived disadvantages in trade with Canada. It highlighted the administration’s focus on negotiating trade agreements and criticized Canada for retaliating against tariffs instead of engaging in dialogue.

These tariffs represent a significant move in the Trump administration’s pursuit of its America First economic policy through trade measures.
