Captain Kanad Bhattacharya’s sacrifice in the Kargil War was honored in Kolkata on the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas. While some debate his status as the first Indian Army officer to die in the conflict, his bravery and sacrifice were commemorated by NCC cadets in a silent march.

Captain Bhattacharya, a young officer from the 8th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, was deployed in the Tiger Hill sector. Facing heavily armed intruders, he led his patrol with courage and determination, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the battle. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, he inspired his troops to hold their ground.

Posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry, Captain Bhattacharya’s mortal remains were recovered in July 1999. His story symbolizes the bravery and sacrifice of all soldiers who have given their lives for the nation, as remembered in a candlelight vigil in Kolkata.
