In a significant development regarding a long-pending bank fraud case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has captured an absconding individual who had been eluding authorities by assuming a false identity in Chennai. The arrested individual, known as M. Naga Kumar alias Tamil Selvan, was taken into custody on March 16, 2026, after extensive surveillance and intelligence operations. The case, originating from September 29, 2015, when the CBI initiated an investigation based on a complaint from Indian Bank’s Chennai North Zone, involves allegations of a conspiracy to deceive the bank by obtaining home loans worth Rs 4.66 crore through fraudulent means.
The complaint specifically implicates K. Rajendran, the main accused and proprietor of M/s Sri Sai Baba Real Estates and Constructions, along with other individuals and unidentified public servants. It is alleged that the accused, including Kumar, acquired the loans using forged documents. Following a thorough inquiry, the CBI filed a chargesheet on March 14, 2017, against 33 accused individuals, including Kumar, who had managed to evade arrest for nearly a decade after the investigation commenced. Authorities disclosed that Kumar had assumed a new identity as Tamil Selvan and had manipulated his official records to avoid detection, residing in Chennai with his spouse under this false identity.
The breakthrough in locating Kumar was achieved through advanced tracking methods and extensive fieldwork by the CBI to ascertain his whereabouts. After confirming his identity discreetly, the agency proceeded to apprehend him. Kumar was presented before a competent court in Chennai and has been placed in judicial custody. This arrest underscores the CBI’s unwavering commitment to pursuing long-absconding suspects involved in financial crimes, irrespective of the time elapsed since the initial offense.
