The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), along with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has successfully extradited Abhay alias Abhay Rana from Portugal to India. Abhay Rana, wanted by Haryana Police for various criminal offenses, faced charges including extortion, criminal intimidation, and operating a crime syndicate.
Investigators revealed that Abhay Rana and his associates allegedly used social media platforms to threaten local businessmen in Haryana’s Karnal district, demanding ransom payments. Those who refused to comply were reportedly subjected to assaults by the syndicate members. A charge sheet was filed against the accused after the investigation was completed.
Upon the issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice at the request of Haryana Police, the accused was located and arrested in Portugal. Following legal procedures, the Portuguese authorities approved his extradition to India. A team from Haryana Police then escorted the accused back to India, where he was handed over at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
The CBI highlighted that this successful extradition is part of their ongoing efforts, with over 160 wanted criminals brought back to India in recent years through coordinated actions using INTERPOL channels. Acting as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, the CBI collaborates with all law enforcement agencies in the country via the BHARATPOL platform for international police cooperation.
