In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has successfully extradited Md. Navas Kakkat Ismail, a wanted fugitive, from the United Arab Emirates. Ismail, who was the subject of a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL, was handed over to Indian authorities on May 4 and brought to Delhi. He faced charges related to serious offenses such as extortion, cheating, forgery, and involvement in an organized crime syndicate in a case filed by the Delhi Police.
Investigators have identified Ismail as a key conspirator in a scheme that extorted money by impersonating government officials in collaboration with other suspects. The CBI, at the behest of the Delhi Police, facilitated the issuance of a Red Notice against Ismail through INTERPOL channels, leading to his arrest by UAE authorities. India then formally requested his extradition, which was granted after diplomatic and legal efforts, and Ismail was flown to Indira Gandhi International Airport and taken into custody by the Delhi Police.
The CBI, acting as India’s National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, plays a vital role in coordinating with law enforcement agencies nationwide through BHARATPOL to extradite fugitives. This successful extradition is part of India’s continuous campaign to dismantle criminal networks operating internationally, demonstrating the country’s determination to bring offenders to justice regardless of their location. Over 150 wanted criminals have been repatriated to India in recent years through this collaborative approach, highlighting the effectiveness of global cooperation in combating organized crime.
