Acting on the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation, the Centre has approved the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court. Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments of Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and senior advocate V. Mohana to the apex court. This decision follows the recent recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
In a statement, Minister Meghwal mentioned that the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has appointed the new judges to the Supreme Court. The recommended individuals include Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court; and senior advocate V. Mohana.
The newly appointed judges bring a wealth of experience to the Supreme Court. For instance, Justice Nagu previously served as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court before becoming the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Similarly, Justice Chandrashekhar and Justice Sachdeva have had distinguished careers in their respective High Courts before their elevation to the apex court. Justice Palli, who was the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, also joins the Supreme Court.
The decision to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court was made in response to the rising number of pending cases. President Droupadi Murmu recently promulgated the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, raising the sanctioned strength from 33 to 37 judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India. This move aims to address the backlog of cases and expedite their resolution.
