The Centre is engaging with stakeholders to explore potential measures for safeguarding children on social media, which may involve limiting access for users below 16 years old, as mentioned by Electronics & IT Secretary S. Krishnan. India is observing global trends before formulating its strategy, emphasizing the significance of this issue worldwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Australia’s ban on social media for under-16s, indicating India’s interest in adopting similar protective measures against cyberbullying and online risks.

Krishnan highlighted the growing concerns in India regarding social media risks, echoing discussions held with the EU and other nations. The government is actively consulting various stakeholders to address these concerns and enhance digital safety, especially for children. Australia’s legislation mandates age verification on major platforms like Facebook and Instagram to prevent underage users, setting a precedent that has drawn global attention.

The ongoing deliberations align with the government’s broader agenda to bolster digital safety, focusing on protecting minors from online threats and regulating intermediary responsibilities and AI advancements. The global trend towards stricter regulations on technology platforms, exemplified by Australia’s proactive stance, underscores the need for comprehensive measures to ensure a safer online environment for all users.
