The Centre dismissed an AI-generated deepfake video that falsely portrayed Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh as claiming India’s cyber systems were jammed on May 10 last year, attributing it to Pakistani propaganda accounts. As India prepares to commemorate the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a successful military action against terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, propaganda accounts from Pakistan are actively spreading misinformation related to last year’s conflict. The government’s PIB Fact Check highlighted that Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a digitally altered video of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh making misleading claims about India’s systems being jammed by Pakistan.
The manipulated video repurposes a genuine statement by the Secretary on India’s defense exports growth and global demand, with no reference to Pakistan or any jamming incidents. The government not only shared the authentic video but also cautioned citizens against believing such misinformation. It emphasized the video as an AI-generated deepfake being circulated to deceive people and clarified that Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh never made such statements. The government urged the public to verify information before sharing it to prevent the spread of edited videos.
On April 22, 2025, terrorists backed by Pakistan carried out the Pahalgam terror attack, resulting in the brutal killing of 26 individuals. The attack, orchestrated by The Resistance Front, a faction of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted victims based on their religion, compelling them to recite the Islamic ‘kalima’ to identify non-Muslims. Among the victims were 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator who bravely tried to protect the tourists. Many victims, including newlyweds, were shot at close range in front of their families.
In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Indian armed forces initiated ‘Operation Sindoor’ on May 6 and 7, executing a focused, measured, and non-escalatory military action aimed at high-value terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Described as a display of India’s military and strategic prowess, ‘Operation Sindoor’ combined military and non-military tactics effectively neutralizing terrorist threats, deterring further aggression, and reinforcing India’s zero-tolerance stance against terrorism while upholding strategic restraint.
