Chad has announced a 20-day state of emergency in the Lake province due to recent terrorist assaults by Boko Haram militants on soldiers. The state of emergency, effective from midnight on May 7 to midnight on May 27, aims to safeguard people and property, as per the country’s army statement. Officials and security forces are instructed to implement necessary measures during this period to ensure public safety.
In response to the Boko Haram attack that resulted in the deaths of 23 Chadian soldiers and injuries to 26 others at the Barka Tolorom island military base, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno extended condolences and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded soldiers. The assault, which occurred at around 10 p.m. local time on Monday, was confirmed by Chadian army spokesman Issakha Acheikh Chanane.
The Lake province, situated in the Lake Chad region bordering Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, frequently experiences attacks linked to Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province. Boko Haram, known for its decade-long presence in the Lake Chad Basin, has caused significant human and material losses in the region.
