The Chadian parliament has approved a three-month extension of the state of emergency in Lake Province. The resolution, passed with 237 votes in favor and none against or abstaining, aims to address ongoing security threats in the region. Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat highlighted the need for the extension due to armed incursions and terrorist activities jeopardizing stability in the Lake Chad Basin.
The extension is intended to enhance the operational capacity of defense and security forces and impose stricter controls on movement. Mahamat emphasized the importance of restricting herders from high-security zones in Lake Province to bolster security measures. Chad initially declared a 20-day state of emergency in the province following attacks by Boko Haram militants.
The emergency measure, effective from May 7 to May 27, was implemented to safeguard citizens and property. Violations of the emergency regulations are subject to legal consequences, as outlined by the country’s army. Notably, recent attacks by Boko Haram resulted in casualties among Chadian soldiers, prompting President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to offer condolences and support to the affected personnel.
