Expressing sorrow over the tragic incident in Mankhurd, where a three-storey chawl collapsed due to heavy rains, Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has announced a thorough investigation into unsafe structures in Mumbai. The building collapse in Janta Nagar resulted in the deaths of five children and one woman, with one person injured and receiving medical care.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, along with MLA Abu Azmi and Rukhsana Siddiqui, visited the victims’ families at the hospital to offer condolences. The structure near the Hanuman Temple in Janta Nagar, consisting of a ground floor and three additional stories, collapsed, trapping several residents under debris.
Emergency response teams, including the NDRF, Mumbai Fire Brigade, and local authorities, swiftly responded to the scene for rescue operations. The victims were taken to nearby hospitals, with ongoing efforts to rescue those trapped under the rubble. The deceased, including five children and one woman, were from the same family, while one survivor is in stable condition at Rajawadi Hospital.
Authorities are conducting rescue operations as fire engines, police, and ambulance services work to clear debris and locate trapped individuals. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has offered financial aid to the families of the deceased, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with state Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, have extended condolences and called for swift action against those responsible for the building collapse. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of old structures in Mumbai and the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
