Commuters in Chennai will soon benefit from improved bus tracking services as the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) gears up to introduce a new mobile application and Passenger Information System (PIS) display boards. Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), these initiatives are set to launch within the next 10 days under the Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS) project.
The upcoming mobile app, named “MTC Chennai,” will offer real-time bus tracking by utilizing data from onboard tracking devices in buses. This new platform promises enhanced accuracy and reliability, featuring a user-friendly interface based on passenger feedback, including inputs from differently-abled individuals. Notably, it will facilitate the identification of low-floor buses, enhancing accessibility for seniors and persons with disabilities.
The revamped application will allow users to track buses across various categories such as ordinary, express, deluxe, electric AC, electric, low-floor, and small buses by simply entering the route number. Additionally, it will include a “nearby bus stops” feature to assist commuters in locating buses heading towards their destination, thereby reducing confusion during boarding.
An integrated SOS feature, with a focus on women’s safety, will be activated post-launch, enabling passengers to directly contact the MTC control center in emergencies through the application. Furthermore, MTC has installed approximately 500 Passenger Information System display boards at bus stops and key termini in Chennai.
These digital boards will exhibit estimated bus arrival times, catering especially to commuters without smartphones. High-traffic areas like Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, Anna Square, Perambur, and Vadapalani will feature larger 10-line display systems showcasing both arrival and departure schedules. The PIS system is currently undergoing final testing before its public rollout, with MTC also considering options for in-app ticket booking and potential integration with the CHENNAI ONE platform in the future.
