Chhattisgarh’s Korea district, also known as Koriya, has gained attention for its unique approach to water conservation, earning praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The district’s ‘Five per cent water conservation model’ was commended by the Prime Minister during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio program. This initiative, where farmers allocated 5 per cent of their land for water conservation through percolation pits, has not only prevented water wastage but also significantly improved groundwater levels.
The success of this model lies in its public participation, with over 1,200 farmers actively supporting the cause. Villagers, including women known as ‘Neer Nayikas’ and youth as ‘Jal Doots,’ embraced the campaign across the district. Decentralized planning through village assemblies ensured effective implementation and local decision-making. As a result, the district witnessed a historic rise of 5.41 meters in groundwater levels and recharged nearly 2.8 million cubic meters of water into reserves in 2025.
Farmers who benefited from the initiative highlighted its impact on soil moisture retention, water source replenishment, and overall farming practices. The district’s Panchayat CEO, Ashutosh Chaturvedi, mentioned that campaigns like ‘Catch the Rain’ and ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ are part of the nationwide efforts for water conservation. Additionally, the ‘Awa Pani Jhonki’ campaign in Korea district, focusing on constructing soak pits in residential and farming areas, has contributed to a continuous increase in groundwater levels.
