Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of West Bengal introduced the ‘Vivekananda Merit Scholarship’ for outstanding students during a felicitation event in Kolkata. He emphasized aligning the state’s education system with the National Education Policy to enhance educational standards. Adhikari highlighted plans for a comprehensive transformation of the education sector in West Bengal.
The government under Adhikari’s leadership aims to implement the National Education Policy across the state, ensuring financial limitations do not hinder deserving students’ access to higher education. Initiatives include incorporating at least one school in every block under the PM Shri project to modernize educational infrastructure. The focus is on developing smart schools, modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, and upgraded libraries in government institutions.
Acknowledging the disparity between government and private educational facilities, Adhikari stressed the need to enhance infrastructure and competitiveness in state-run schools. He urged private educational institutions to maintain transparency and accountability in admission and evaluation processes, emphasizing affordability for all students. Adhikari also emphasized the importance of depoliticizing the education sector and granting universities greater autonomy.
The Chief Minister announced the Vivekananda Merit Scholarship, designed on Swami Vivekananda’s principles, to be awarded solely based on merit and financial need, without any religious bias. The state government decided to discontinue religious allowances in favor of scholarships for deserving students, regardless of caste or religion. Interested students can apply for the scholarship directly through the Education Department.
