Colombia’s head coach Nestor Lorenzo admitted that his team did not perform at their peak despite a solid 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan in their first Group K match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Goals by Daniel Munoz, Luis Diaz, and Jaminton Campaz secured the win for Colombia at the Mexico City Stadium, placing them at the top of Group K ahead of their upcoming match against DR Congo. Lorenzo expressed that Colombia missed opportunities, especially in the first half, where they could have capitalized more on their chances.

Lorenzo highlighted that his players were overly cautious in possession, failing to convert promising plays into clear scoring chances. He mentioned, “Sometimes there was too much possession and too much fear of losing the ball. Nobody was finishing the moves.” Despite the comfortable victory, Lorenzo felt that his team could have performed better and been more clinical in front of goal.

The match witnessed over 80,000 spectators, predominantly clad in Colombia’s colors, creating a lively atmosphere. While Lorenzo appreciated the enthusiastic support, he acknowledged that the pressure of the occasion might have affected some players negatively. He stated, “It is a beautiful energy, but emotionally it weighed on some of the players. I think it had to do with the emotional burden of the first game and also with the responsibility of being favorites.”

Looking ahead, Colombia will focus on their next Group K encounter against DR Congo in Guadalajara, aiming to capitalize on their initial success and move closer to the knockout rounds. The team seeks to maintain their winning momentum and secure a strong position in the tournament.
