Congo DR secured their first World Cup victory in 52 years by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 in a thrilling match. Yoane Wissa’s brace and a goal from Fiston Mayele led Congo DR to a remarkable comeback after initially trailing.
This historic win marks Congo DR’s first appearance at the global showpiece since 1974 when they were known as Zaire. The victory propels them into the knockout stages for the first time in their history, alongside Colombia and Portugal.
Despite Uzbekistan’s early lead, Congo DR fought back strongly. Wissa equalized from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, followed by Mayele’s decisive goal ten minutes later. The victory was sealed with Wissa’s second goal in injury time.
Congo DR’s next challenge in the Round of 32 will be against England on 1 July in Atlanta.
