The Congress and 23 other political parties, along with an Independent MP, have jointly sent a letter to Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, addressing concerns about the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and other election-related matters. The decision to draft the letter was made during a meeting attended by 21 political parties and one Independent on June 8, 2026. The letter, now signed by 23 political parties and one Independent, emphasizes the opposition’s stance on Solidarity, Unity, and Resistance.
Leaders from various Opposition parties, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Omar Abdullah, and Supriya Sule, were present at the INDIA bloc meeting on June 8. The meeting discussed a wide range of issues, and it was announced that the INDIA bloc would convene every two months, with the next meeting scheduled for August in Hyderabad, Telangana.
The Election Commission initiated the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process a year ago to verify electoral rolls comprehensively. The exercise aims to ensure the accuracy of voter lists and enhance the electoral process’s integrity. Approximately six crore names have been removed from electoral rolls nationwide, with the revision ongoing in 19 states and union territories. Opposition parties, including Congress, have criticized the SIR process, alleging it undermines democracy, while the government asserts it targets illegal infiltrators to safeguard voter list integrity.
