The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President, Harshwardhan Sapkal, declared that despite BJP’s threats, Congress triumphed in 41 Municipal Council Presidents and 1,006 Corporators’ positions. Sapkal affirmed that the party’s success would extend to municipal corporations as well.
Accusing the ruling Mahayuti party of distorting democracy during the local body elections, Sapkal criticized Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his aggressive tactics. He highlighted instances of violence and criminal elements infiltrating the electoral process, raising concerns about the state of politics in Maharashtra.
Sapkal condemned the BJP for allegedly supporting criminal elements and manipulating urban issues for political gain. He emphasized the need for fair elections and criticized the ruling party’s approach towards unopposed seats, advocating for the inclusion of a “None of the Above” (NOTA) option to uphold democratic principles.
Asserting the Congress’s stance against unchecked capitalism under the Modi government, Sapkal warned of the dangers posed by favoritism towards certain businesses. He proposed nationalizing companies to prevent undue influence and draw parallels to historical interventions in the interest of the nation’s welfare.
Highlighting the alliance between Congress and the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi in key cities, Sapkal underscored the ideological unity driving the partnership. He called for a collaborative approach focused on substantive issues, urging alliance members to refrain from making unfounded remarks that could undermine their shared objectives.
