As Kerala gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections on April 9, the Congress party is optimistic about securing a win in all 140 seats. Criticizing the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress highlighted the government’s failure to fulfill key promises related to job creation and healthcare improvements over the past decade. The party believes that public discontent with the LDF administration is on the rise, with voters increasingly recognizing unmet commitments such as the creation of 40 lakh jobs and the enhancement of healthcare services.
Congress leaders attribute their confidence to their past governance performance and the perceived shortcomings of the current government. Pawan Khera, a Congress leader, emphasized that the party’s assurance stems from its historical track record of effective governance and the public’s realization of the ruling alliance’s unfulfilled pledges. Khera criticized the state’s healthcare system, pointing to recent incidents as evidence of systemic deficiencies.
According to Khera, the LDF’s alleged indirect support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a concern, with attempts to introduce the BJP into Kerala’s political landscape through unconventional means. However, Khera expressed confidence that Kerala’s educated populace would reject such endeavors, emphasizing the need for voters to move away from the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led alliance. He also downplayed the BJP’s prospects in the state, stating that the party would struggle to establish a significant presence.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that efforts might be made to divide the anti-incumbency vote. Tharoor emphasized the UDF’s commitment to the voters, dismissing the BJP’s electoral strength in Kerala as marginal. He highlighted the enthusiastic response the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is receiving, particularly among various segments of society, signaling a growing wave of support for change.
With the upcoming elections poised to be a significant test of political strength and voter sentiment in Kerala, the primary contest is expected to unfold between the ruling LDF and the Congress-led UDF. Despite the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seeking to expand its influence, the battleground remains primarily between the two major alliances.
