Onam, Kerala’s most celebrated festival, is not just a harvest celebration but a cultural extravaganza that unites Malayalis across the globe. Rooted in mythology and tradition, it marks the annual homecoming of the benevolent King Mahabali and the appearance of Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar.

In 2025, Onam festivities will begin on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 (Atham day) and conclude with the grand Thiruvonam on Friday, September 5, 2025.

According to the Malayalam calendar (Chingam month), Thiruvonam Nakshathram will start on September 4 at 11:44 PM and end on September 5 at 11:38 PM.

Significance of Onam

Onam is more than a festival—it is Kerala’s identity. It commemorates the legend of King Mahabali, whose reign was marked by peace, prosperity, and equality. According to mythology, Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar sent Mahabali to the netherworld but granted him permission to visit his people once every year. Onam celebrates this divine homecoming with unmatched joy and devotion.

  3. Vallam Kali (Snake Boat Race):
A thrilling spectacle where oarsmen row long snake boats to rhythmic songs.
  4. Kaikottikali (Thiruvathira Dance):
Women dressed in traditional Kerala sarees perform synchronized dances around a lamp.
  5. Onakkodi (New Clothes):
Families exchange gifts of new clothes symbolizing prosperity and renewal.
  6. Oonjal (Swing):
