Congress Working Committee member and former Tripura Minister Sudip Roy Barman reiterated the party’s call for a judicial inquiry, overseen by a Tripura High Court judge, to investigate the “mysterious” death of Director General of Police Anurag. Anurag, a senior IPS officer, was found dead in his office washroom under unclear circumstances on July 20. The Tripura Police formed a team on July 24, led by Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, to investigate the incident further.

Alleging a conspiracy behind Anurag’s death, Roy Barman, also a Congress MLA, criticized the state government for not ordering a judicial probe monitored by a High Court judge. He questioned the government’s reluctance and emphasized the need for transparency in the investigation. Roy Barman, along with other Congress leaders, accused the government of trying to suppress the truth by avoiding a thorough inquiry.

The Congress leader urged the Tripura High Court to intervene in the case, highlighting the significance of uncovering the truth behind the senior police officer’s death. Roy Barman stressed that the matter should not be politicized and called for a fair and impartial investigation. Claiming suspicion of murder, he emphasized the importance of revealing the facts to the public and ensuring accountability.

Anurag’s funeral took place with state honors in his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. Various political parties, including CPI-M and CPI, have joined the demand for a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the IPS officer’s death. Left parties and Congress have organized protests seeking a High Court-monitored investigation into the incident. Anurag, who had a distinguished career, served in various key positions, including with the United Nations and central agencies, before his untimely death.
