Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Gauhati High Court for anticipatory bail concerning an FIR filed in Assam regarding his alleged defamatory comments about the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife. The petition, lodged on April 20, has been officially registered by the court for further proceedings.
The move follows the Supreme Court’s recent decision to deny Khera protection from arrest and to not extend his transit anticipatory bail. The Court emphasized that Khera could seek bail directly from the Assam court without any prejudice from the previous orders.
In response to Khera’s plea for extended protection, the Supreme Court refused the request, leading to the vacation of the interim safeguard against arrest. The case, originating from Assam Police’s FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, involves allegations of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy made by Khera against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
