Kolkata, Aug 16 (IANS) The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) was observing a ‘black day’ throughout the state on Sunday to protest the murder of a party leader and his son at Bethuadahari under Nakashipara Police Station in Nadia district.

The incident happened late Saturday night. It is learnt that Congress leader Anisur Rahman and his 24-year-old son Abu Sufian were returning home in a four-wheeler when some miscreants blocked the road and allegedly fired several rounds of bullets. The car was stopped, and the father-son duo were thrashed and attacked with sharp weapons. According to sources, both died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. After receiving information about the incident, the sleuths from the Nakashipara police station reached there.

Condemning the incident, the former state Congress president and the former five-time Lok Sabha member, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury made a social media post claiming that although the current BJP-ruled state government came to power in the state with the slogan of ‘Fear Out, Trust In’, in reality such a heinous incident on Independence Day raised several questions about people’s safety and the right to freely engage in politics.

He demanded a proper and impartial probe in the matter and exemplary punishment for the culprits at the earliest. “Congress leadership is with the bereaved family in this difficult time,” Chowdhury added.

The current state Congress president in West Bengal, Subhankar Sarkar, said that his party will continue its fight against the attempts to silence the voices of minorities and the opposition in this state, and hence WBPCC is observing a black day across the state today,” said Sarkar.

Local Congress workers alleged that the attack was carried out on the “orders” of jailed Trinamool Congress leader Jubbar Sheikh. “Jubbar committed this incident from jail by using miscreants to occupy the area. If the administration conducts a proper and impartial investigation, this matter will be completely clear. We want exemplary punishment for him,” local Congress leader Tipu Sultan told media persons.

Surajit Kumar Dey, Additional Superintendent (Rural) of Krishnanagar Police District, under whose jurisdiction the scene of crime comes, said that a detailed investigation into the matter is underway. “It is not possible to say anything more right now,” he added.
