A criminal involved in a violent attack on a couple was shot during a confrontation with the police while trying to escape after seizing a police officer’s gun. The Inspector General of Police for the Southern Range, Niti Shekhar, disclosed that the criminal, Mukesh Sahu, grabbed an Assistant Sub-Inspector’s pistol and fired at the police while being transported to an associate’s hideout.
In response to Mukesh’s actions, the police engaged in controlled firing to protect themselves, resulting in Mukesh sustaining a gunshot wound to his foot. Shekhar emphasized that strict legal measures would be taken against individuals engaged in criminal behavior. Notably, two other suspects, Raj Malhotra and Lingaraj Samal alias Rinku, were apprehended by Berhampur police for their alleged roles in the assault on the couple.
Raj Malhotra was reportedly present during the assault and aided the main perpetrators, while Lingaraj Samal was accused of plotting with others and providing them shelter. Both Malhotra and Samal have multiple cases pending against them under various sections of the IPC and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at different police stations in Berhampur. The attack on Umesh Rath and his fiancee, which occurred in Berhampur, sparked public outrage after a video of the brutal incident circulated on social media, raising concerns about law enforcement in the region.
