A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) passed away at a camp in Zainapora, Shopian district. The ASI collapsed suddenly and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Community Health Centre. Meanwhile, in Kulgam district, a 25-year-old mechanic and graduate was discovered deceased at his home in Chimmer, where he was found hanging.
The deceased CRPF officer hailed from Rajbagh in Kathua district, with authorities initiating investigations into the incident. In Kulgam, the youth’s body underwent postmortem examinations before being handed over to his family for final rites. The reasons behind the youth’s demise are under investigation, amidst growing concerns over rising suicides among young individuals in Kashmir.
Suicide cases among Kashmir’s youth have surged, ranking as the fourth leading cause of mortality for those aged 15 to 29. The region has witnessed a rise in suicide attempts, with figures escalating from 472 cases in 2020 to 586 in 2021. Factors contributing to this alarming trend include drug abuse, with around 4.6% of the population using opioid substances, often starting at a young age.
The prevalence of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, is significant in the region. Economic challenges, high unemployment rates, and intense competition for academic and job opportunities add to the pressures faced by the youth. Societal stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse, along with family-related issues, are cited as barriers to seeking help.
In a separate incident, a 24-year-old individual jumped into the River Jhelum in Srinagar city, adding to the distressing trend of youth fatalities in the region.
