Despite government efforts to raise awareness, cybercriminals in Odisha have defrauded people of over Rs 260.61 crore, as per official data. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed in the Odisha Assembly that 4,238 cybercrime cases were registered between June 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025. These cases involved financial fraud, social media fraud, hacking, and other cyber fraud types.

CM Majhi stated that Odisha Police arrested 868 cyber fraudsters in the last 18 months. Among them, 172 were involved in financial fraud, 638 in social media fraud, one in hacking-related fraud, and 57 in other cyber fraud cases. The police managed to recover only Rs 61.36 lakh out of the defrauded amount and froze another Rs 8.89 crore during this period.

Moreover, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal received 27,368 and 49,426 complaints from Odisha in 2024 and 2025, respectively. The portal data revealed that cyber fraudsters swindled over Rs 711.99 crore from victims during this period. CM Majhi mentioned that in 2024, Rs 2,47,87,268 was returned to victims, and Rs 23,64,30,768 was put on hold in suspect bank accounts.
