Dalit youths in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district protested strongly after being refused permission by upper caste individuals to lift the village Goddess’s palanquin. This incident escalated tensions in the area. The local police from Chikkaballapura Rural intervened and are currently engaging in discussions with community leaders from both sides to defuse the situation.
The police reported a clash between the two groups, resulting in the Goddess’s idol being abandoned in the middle of the road. The confrontation arose during a procession where villagers, including Dalits, had contributed donations for the event. However, when Dalit youths requested to participate in carrying the palanquin, their request was allegedly denied, sparking arguments and the subsequent clash.
Upon receiving information about the incident, law enforcement promptly arrived at the scene. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) also rushed to oversee the situation closely. In a separate incident in Malagalu, Kanakapura town, a Dalit individual named Anish Kumar had his left hand severed by an armed gang. This incident adds to a series of past events, including a court sentencing 101 individuals for a mob attack on Dalits in Koppal district ten years ago.
