The Election Commission has reminded Tamil Nadu residents that the deadline for adding names to the electoral roll is approaching, set to conclude on Friday, January 30. Over 16 lakh applications have been received in the state as of January 27. This initiative is part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The draft electoral roll, released on December 19, revealed the removal of 97.38 lakh voters, causing the total number of voters in Tamil Nadu to decrease from 6,41,14,587 to 5,43,76,756. Among those deleted, 66,44,881 were due to change of residence, 26,94,672 due to death, and 3,98,278 identified as duplicate voters.
Affected voters were given the opportunity to rectify errors in their entries between December 19 and January 18. The Election Commission extended the deadline to January 30 for voter registration and correction processes, following requests from political parties. All applications received by this date will be reviewed, and the final electoral roll will be published on February 17.
