The death toll in a tragic shellfish incident in Karnataka’s Karwar district has reached 11 as the body of Mahadev Nayak, who went missing while collecting shellfish at Alvekodi in Bhatkal, was found. The recovery was part of a joint operation by the NDRF team and Eshwar Malpe’s team, with 10 bodies retrieved earlier and three individuals rescued by locals.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed condolences over the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each family of the deceased. The victims, all from the same family and residents of Sharadahole in Padushirali village near Shirali, were identified, including names like Lakshmi Madev Naik and Mastamma Manjunath Naik.

The tragic incident occurred in the Tattehakkalu river near Bhatkal, where a group of 14 people, including the victims, were collecting shellfish. Authorities mentioned that the family might have unintentionally entered a deeper part of the river, leading to the unfortunate event. Rescue operations involved NDRF personnel and local police efforts.
