The death toll in the explosion and fire at an allegedly illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area has reached nine. Hospital authorities confirmed that victims succumbed to severe burn injuries after being admitted for treatment. Nine people were taken to L.G. Hospital, with four declared dead before arrival, including one man and three women.
At the hospital, five others with extensive burn injuries were admitted, and four of them later passed away during treatment. These victims had sustained around 95 per cent burns, including one man and three children. One woman remains in stable condition at L.G. Hospital. Meanwhile, at Asarwa Civil Hospital, six individuals were brought in after the explosion, resulting in one more fatality, bringing the total death toll to nine.
The explosion occurred at an open plot and a shed used for firecracker manufacturing in Mehmudpura. The site, suspected to be an illegal unit, caught fire after a powerful blast, causing significant damage and trapping several individuals. Rapid Action Force personnel were among the first responders, aiding in rescue efforts before the fire brigade arrived.
Authorities deployed firefighting resources, including a Mini Fighter and water bowsers, to control the fire. The operation, supervised by senior fire officials, successfully contained the blaze. The cause of the explosion remains unknown, prompting an ongoing investigation. Ahmedabad Mayor, Chief Fire Officer, and other officials visited the site to oversee rescue operations and ensure proper medical care for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed condolences and announced ex gratia assistance for the victims’ families and the injured.
