The Higher Education Department has named Debabrata Das as the new Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University, filling a vacancy that lasted almost a year. Das, presently an Advisor to the Higher Education Department of the Assam government, will be the 11th Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University. His appointment is for a five-year term or until he turns 70, as per the communication from the Higher Education Department.
Das’s service terms as Vice-Chancellor will align with the University’s regulations and guidelines, as per the official announcement. The position had been unoccupied since the previous Vice-Chancellor’s tenure ended on August 21, 2025. Shyamal Das, the university’s senior-most professor, has been acting as the Vice-Chancellor since August last year.
Established in 1987 by the state government, Tripura University became a Central University in 2007 under the Tripura University Act, 2006. It boasts numerous academic departments and a vast network of affiliated colleges and institutions across the state. Currently, 68 colleges and institutions in Tripura are affiliated with the university.
